As part of the Sentinel project, we are actively reaching out to stakeholders who hold or have access to in-depth pedestrian collision data, with the aim of strengthening the evidence base behind the app’s development. We are currently reaching out to various organisations with in depth accident data, such as: the RAIDS accident database in the UK, GIDAS in Germany, ITARDA in Japan, and NHTSA in the United States. If your organisation holds relevant pedestrian collision data, or you have expertise in this area and would like to collaborate, please contact us.

Data Example

Sentinel is informed by in depth collision data, such as the data published by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). We draw on two of its dedicated pedestrian to vehicle collision databases, the Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS) and the Vulnerable Road User In-Depth Crash Investigation Study (VICIS). Both record detailed collision information, such as the vehicle involved, the circumstances of the impact, pictures of the impact location, pedestrian details, and the injuries sustained.

The example below shows the kind of information we want Sentinel to help capture at the scene. Although these databases come from the US, the details they record are directly relevant to the pedestrian collisions attended by paramedics and EMTs in the UK. Capturing this information could support clinical decision making and give researchers a clearer picture of how pedestrian injuries occur.
